Regional anesthesia is produced when an anesthetic agent is injected close to a nerve proximal to the involved tissue. Compared with local infiltration of anesthetics, nerve blocks provide anesthesia of longer duration, usually require a smaller amount of anesthetic agent, and often are less painful. In addition, nerve blocks do not distort the involved tissues. In most cases, full anesthetic effect is achieved 10 to 20 minutes after injection, although the time varies, depending on the proximity of the injection to the nerve and the area of distribution needed.
